Synopsis: The 2013 fall crop of almonds and walnuts are just beginning to be formed on the trees in California.

California grows both the almonds and walnuts that we use. Both grow on trees. Before a nut is formed on the tree, a flower first appears. Almonds first and then walnuts. So the almond bloom has occurred and now the walnut bloom is beginning. The weather has been good in California for both events. It is hard to believe that it is only March and it will not be until September and October when we will be able to say again that we have new crop nuts!

Why are these nuts with the shell available in stores only around the winter holidays, but the very same nuts without the shell are available all year round?

J in CA - In my father's day, in shell nuts were part of the Christmas holiday dinner much like how turkey is served at Thanksgiving. So the habit of selling them only during November and December came about because of this and has continued. Hope this helps!
